A "Dynasty" reboot is being scheduled for The CW after the network purchased orders for the former ABC drama that ran from 1981 to 1989.

The original "Dynasty" followed the feuding between two wealthy families, the Carringtons and Colbys. "Gossip Girl" creators Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Sallie Patrick are being put in charge of pumping new life into old primetime soap opera, Variety reported.

"'Dynasty' marks a return to the female-skewing soap operas such as 'Gossip Girl' that typified an earlier era of the CW, but have given way to romantic dramedies such as 'Jane the Virgin' and 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,'" Variety writer Daniel Holloway said.

Deadline.com wrote that the show's story will be told mainly from the perspectives Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into the family.

Elizabeth Gillies, of the series "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll," will play Fallon Carrington, while Nathalie Kelley, from "The Vampire Diaries," will play Cristal.

Others who have signed on to appear on the series, according to Deadline.com, are James Mackay, from "The Leftovers," Alan Dale, from "The O.C.," Sam Adegoke, "Murder in the First," Robert Christopher Riley, from "Hit the Floor," and Rafael de la Fuente, from "Empire."

"'Dynasty' is the latest reboot to hit the small screen as remakes and revivals continue to be in high demand as broadcast, cable and streaming outlets look for proven IP in a bid to cut through the cluttered scripted landscape of more than 450 originals," The Hollywood Reporter writer Lesley Goldberg noted.

Reaction on social media to "Dynasty's" return has been mixed.
