The lights of the Eiffel Tower were turned off Thursday night in honor of those killed in the attack at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 12 people dead in Paris.
Blacking out the tower's lights was one of numerous tributes made around the world while a nationwide manhunt continued in France for those responsible for the mass killing. A video of the brief, somber tribute was posted by BBC News.
The lights went off about 8 p.m. and were slowly turned back in as thousands of people gathered on in Republique Square for a second night of vigils,
according to London's Daily Mail. Earlier, Notre-Dame Cathedral rang its bells in tribute to the Charlie Hebdo victims.
"Je Suis Charlie," which translates to "I am Charlie" signs were carried by thousands of mourners at the memorials around Paris. The signs have become a rallying cry that has popped up in other places around the world.
Anne Hidalgo, Paris' mayor, joined mourners in Republique Square Thursday night as many lit candles to illuminate the night.
"Our city has been a refuge for writers, philosophers, journalists who were threatened for their ideas," Hidalgo said. "There is no place in Paris for extremist ideas of any sort."
