Elon Musk's phone number was made public Tuesday after the Tesla CEO appears to have misfired a Twitter direct message not to its intended recipient but to his 16.7 million followers instead.

“Do you have a sec to talk? My cell is ...” Musk wrote from his account on Tuesday to John Carmack, the chief technology officer of Facebook Inc.-owned Oculus. The Tesla Inc. chief executive officer quickly deleted the post. He apparently meant to send his contact information via direct message, but instead tweeted it at Carmack.

Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion in 2014. Carmack’s role inventing some of the technology led to legal disputes with his former employer.

Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the rocket company he runs, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
