Emilia Clarke has been named the Sexiest Woman Alive 2015 by
Esquire magazine, giving the "Game of Thrones" star a new title along with "mother of dragons."
Clarke, 28, who has made a name for her herself playing Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's award-winning "Game of Thrones," follows in the footsteps of 2014 winner Penelope Cruz and 2013 selection "Avengers" star Scarlett Johansson.
"Emilia has the very real charm of a certain type of English upbringing," wrote Benjamin Markovits of Esquire. "'A pocket rocket,' my friend calls her — small, sexy, lively, and lots of fun. But there's a whole set of virtues that goes with the fun. There's an attitude to life."
Clarke shed the "Game of Thrones" blond locks to star in her first big-budget film this summer, playing a young Sarah Connor opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jai Courtney in "Terminator Genisys." The movie made $440.1 million globally and $89.7 million domestically, according to
Box Office Mojo.
Clarke's hot 2015 also includes being named GQ's Woman of the Year in September, along with the movie and continued success of "Thrones," reported
Us Weekly.
Clarke told Esquire she was part of a second group of actors for the "Game of Thrones" pilot after HBO was unhappy with the original.
"I had two scenes which told me nothing and not very much time in which to read all those [George R. R. Martin] books," Clarke told Esquire. "So I did what every good actor does and Wikipedia'd the living crap out of it."
She has been nominated for Emmy Awards in 2013 and 2015 for best supporting actress in a drama series for where work in "Game of Thrones."
Clarke told
USA Today in June that she felt fortunate at this stage of her career to play Targaryen and an iconic role as Sarah Connor in the "Terminator" franchise.
"That's a mantle I'm incredibly happy to take on." Clarke said. "It's great to be such a young girl and have the opportunity to play such strong, powerful women."
