The name of the baby girl born to Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling on Sept. 12 has finally been revealed: Esmeralda Amada Gosling.
It’s been a month since Esmeralda was born, but Mendes tried to hide her pregnancy, so it’s not a stretch that they would keep the baby’s name low-key.
Esmeralda’s middle name, Amada, matches with the name of a Mendes character from "We Own the Night." In that drama with Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix, Mendes played Amada Juarez.
"She's absolutely in heaven being a mom. She's never been happier,"
a friend of Mendes told People magazine after the baby’s birth. "She and Ryan are just in awe of this beautiful person they created. It's a really special time for them."
The couple began dating in 2011, and were very careful to keep the pregnancy under wraps in the beginning.
“Their lives completely changed as soon as Eva got pregnant. They used to travel all over the place together and go on hikes with their dogs. [But in the past few months] she barely left the house,” a source told People. “Ryan has been taking care of her, picking up food and running errands. He has been very supportive of keeping things a secret.”
Unlike some baby names that stars have given their children, the Mendes-Gosling choice received compliments from the media.
Elle broke down the basis of the name, pointing out that Esmeralda likely pays homage to Mendes’ Cuban heritage, and it means “beloved emerald” in Spanish.
