Facebook facial recognition wants to help you manage your identity by sending out alerts when photos appear on the social network without your knowledge, Forbes noted.

This could come in handy if there are photos floating around that you would prefer not to have public, or if someone attempts to impersonate you online, although the function can still be limited by a user's privacy settings.
Facebook unveiled the new Photo Review feature earlier this week.
"If you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged," said Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, Facebook's director of applied machine learning in a blogpost.
"You're in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it."

Aside from serving to protect a person's privacy, the new feature could also be a handy tool for a trip down memory lane, alerting people of photos that would have long since been forgotten, Rob Sherman, Facebook's head of privacy, told The Verge.

The function compares images with other photos in which you are already tagged, the only snag is that you will only be notified about posts that appear in your audience, The Independent said.

The user will also have the option to choose whether they want Facebook to recognize them in photos and videos and, while there is an option to enable or disable facial recognition for each feature that uses the tool, Forbes noted that Facebook was working on introducing a master on/off switch to make things simpler.
