Two FBI agents were shot while trying to arrest a Chicago gang leader at his suburban Park Forest home on Tuesday. Melvin Toran later was found dead inside, but the FBI wasn't saying if he was killed by the FBI SWAT team that descended on the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.
A Cook County medical examiner's office spokeswoman identified 50-year-old Toran as the dead man, reported
The Associated Press. She said a cause of death had not been determined because an autopsy was pending.
The
Chicago Tribune described Toran as a reputed high-ranking member of the Black P Stone Nation street gang and said Tuesday's arrest attempt stemmed from a two-year investigation that targeted narcotics trafficking by members of the Black P Stone Nation and others, according the U.S. Attorney's Office. It involved wiretapped cellphones and extensive surveillance.
At least 10 other suspects were arrested early Tuesday by federal agents and Chicago police, including one in Minnesota and another in Indiana, said the Tribune, and "distribution quantities" of cocaine and heroin, cash and firearms were seized.
FBI spokesman Garrett Croon said the injured agents were released after being treated at hospitals, noted the AP.
