In China, 43 fossilized dinosaur eggs have been found by crews doing road work in Heyuan, in southern China's Guangdong Province, including 19 eggs that are completely intact.
Experts at the Chinese Academy of Sciences will
examine the eggs to determine what type of dinosaur laid them, the South China Morning Post reported.
Since 1996, about 17,000 fragments of fossilized dinosaur eggs have been found in Heyuan, which calls itself the “Home of Dinosaurs.”
The eggs were discovered while workers were laying sewer pipes. One worker allegedly tried to run off with two of the eggs but was
stopped by people who formed a human chain to protect the site until police arrived, The Daily Mail reported.
“There are fossilized dinosaur eggs everywhere in the red sandstone layer but they were never found because the city was built on top of the layers,” Heyuan Dinosaur Museum head curator Du Yanli said, according to the Daily Mail. “With the recent road and sewage system upgrade, the red sandstone layer is being exposed and has led to the discovery of the fossils.”
Work has temporarily halted in the area while further research is conducted.
The museum received a Guinness World Record in 2004 for having the largest collection of dinosaur eggs.
