On a roll with his controversial remarks, black comedian and actor Jamie Foxx used his opening monologue on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend to plug his upcoming film “Django Unchained” and joke about killing white people.
“I got a movie coming out,” Foxx told the SNL audience. “And in the movie I had to wear chains. How whack is that? But don't be worried about it, because I get out the chains, I get free, I save my wife, and I kill all the white people in the movie. How great is that?”
The monologue was light-hearted, yet racially-charged.
“I'm black, and I’m dressed all black cause it's good to be black. Black is the new white,” said Foxx. “You know how I know black is in right now? Cause the Nets moved to Brooklyn. How black is that? They got black jerseys, black court. I mean, how black is that? And Jay-Z is the owner, a rapper. How black is that?"
The comments came two weeks after Foxx referred to President Barack Obama as “our Lord and Savior” during November’s Soul Train awards show.
After receiving immediate criticism from some Christians, Foxx defended his November statement on “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I'm a comic [and] sometimes I think people get a little too tight,” Foxx said. “ It's getting a little tougher for us comedians [because] some people take it and want to make a huge story out of it, but it's a joke.”
Foxx, who won an academy award for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 film “Ray” and was an outspoken supporter of Obama in his 2012 re-election campaign, has yet to address the SNL controversy, probably because it hasn’t picked up traction in the mainstream media.
In “Django Unchained,” Foxx plays a slave-turned-bounty hunter who rescues his wife from an abusive Mississippi plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
The film is based loosely on the 1966 Italian spaghetti Western film titled “Django” in which a drifter rescues a young woman before taking revenge on the men who killed his wife.
