Dairy Queen is 75 years old this year, and the company is celebrating by giving away free small vanilla ice cream cones Monday.

Dairy Queen joins other sweet franchises in giving away treats. Pennsylvania-based Rita’s Italian Ice gives away a small Italian ice every year to celebrate the first day of spring on March 20.

“That’s right, for over 20 years we’ve treated each and every Guest to a free Italian Ice. It’s a Rita’s Tradition. Just our way of kicking off the season—and spreading a little happiness,” the Rita's website said.

Ben & Jerry’s customers can get in on the free action on April 14, when the company celebrates free cone day.

Free food (and ice cream) promotions are a great way to get new customers in the door and to get everyone online talking about your products and business. Especially in this day of social media:

The Ben & Jerry’s website plays the promotion to the hilt, including articles on “10 Ways You Can Do Good By Eating Free Ice Cream” and “10 Ways to Pass the Time in Line on Free Cone Day.”

One suggestion on the line wait – start a sing-a-long. “Bring a ukulele or belt it out a cappella style, and get your line neighbors to join in. We’re all ears … and spoons!” the site said.
