iPhone 6s battery replacements will be issued to customers for free after reports that the Apple smartphones are shutting down unexpectedly.

Apple said the smartphones experiencing the shutdowns were manufactured between September and October of 2015, USA Today noted.

According to an Apple support page, the battery issue only involves “a very small number” of iPhone 6s models, and poses no safety risk for customers.

Apple forums say users are having to plug their phones in to get them to restart after shutting down, sometimes while being halfway charged, the Washington Post noted.

A state-approved consumer-protection group in China was first to ask Apple to do something about the battery reports, and the Chinese Consumers Association told the company that the battery problem was affecting iPhone 6 users as well, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Users experiencing the battery issue are encouraged to contact their service provider or a local Apple store to have the battery’s replaced free of charge, USA Today noted.

However, if a customer has other problems with their phone, such as a cracked screen, they’ll have to pay for those damages separately in order to get their battery replaced for free, as the company said “other problems with the phone can make it harder to replace the battery,” the Washington Post noted.

Reports about the shutdowns started just weeks after the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were launched.

Samsung stopped selling its Galaxy Note 7s earlier this year after reports surfaced about overheating batteries that could cause the smartphones to catch on fire, USA Today noted.
