A small plane crashed on the 405 Freeway in Orange County, California, near the John Wayne Airport on Friday morning around 9:30 a.m., injuring two people.
The plane, a twin-engine Cessna 310, caught fire when it crashed, and both people aboard the plane suffered serious injuries, ABC 7 reported. A male and a female were transported to the Orange County Global Medical Center by helicopter.
The plane clipped one vehicle on the freway as it crashed, causing minimal damage and no injuries to anyone in the vehicle, ABC 7 reported.
John Wayne Airport posted on Twitter after the crash that the plane had landed short of the runway, and the airport had to be closed temporarily to incoming planes after the incident. The freeway also was closed in both directions until the northbound side reopened around 10 a.m.
The Cessna was traveling from Palm Springs to the John Wayne Airport, Fox News reported.
An eyewitness said the plane appeared to be out of control before it crashed onto the freeway, ABC 7 reported. A thick cloud of black smoke could be seen by those near the scene.
Twitter users called the fact that no one was killed a miracle ... or science.
