A 1.7 million-pound frozen chicken recall in the U.S. and Canada was issued on Monday from Barber Foods of Portland, Maine, after the company received several reports of consumers in Minnesota and Wisconsin contracting salmonella poisoning.

A Barber Foods recall had initially been issued on July 2 for 58,000 pounds of frozen, raw stuffed chicken products that were produced on Jan. 29, Feb. 20, and April 23, according to Fox News. The expanded recall covers chicken products produced between Feb. 17 and May 20 with the establishment number “P-276” inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) mark of inspection, and it was issued after two more salmonella poisoning cases were reported.

The potentially contaminated products include chicken breasts stuffed with broccoli and cheese, asparagus and cheese, and ham and cheese, as well as chicken fingers, Chicken Kiev, and Cordon Bleu, according to The Washington Post.

“FSIS (USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service) and the company are concerned that some products may be in consumers' freezers,” said the USDA in a statement released on Sunday. "Although the products subject to recall may appear to be cooked, these products are in fact uncooked (raw) and should be handled carefully to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen.”

The USDA classified the expanded effort as a Class I recall, which is the most serious type with a “reasonable probability” that consuming the food product would cause serious health problems, according to the Portland Press Herald. Last year, 63 Class I recalls were issued with four of them concerning potential salmonella contamination. Of those 63, only three recalls involved a quantity larger than 1.7 million pounds.

Barber Foods, which is now a division of AdvancePierre Foods Inc. as of 2011, has been established in Maine for 60 years.

Nick Vehr, a spokesman for AdvancePierre Foods, wrote in a statement that Barber Foods is collaborating with the USDA’s FSIS division “to modify our production practices including, but not limited to, additional levels of microbiological analysis and additional control procedures to reduce salmonella in both incoming and outgoing raw, stuffed chicken breast products,” according to the Press Herald.

Salmonella is one of the most common food-borne illnesses with symptoms including diarrhea, cramps, and fevers.
