Numerous frozen vegetable items distributed around the country were voluntarily recalled on Saturday by CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington, for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
According to a company statement released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Listeria was found during regularly scheduled testing done by state health officials in Ohio. The organism was discovered in one lot of Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) organic petite green peas and one lot of IQF organic white sweet cut corn.
Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.
The agency states that people who contract listeriosis often suffer from fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. The CDC said that the bacteria can also spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract, and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
CRF Frozen Foods said there have been no reports of illnesses reported in connection with the recall.
The recall covered various sizes of True Goodness by Meijer Organic Petite Green Peas (UPC code 713733430999) and Organic White Sweet Corn (713733430982); Wellsley Farms Organic Mixed Vegetables (888670010136), Organic Greens (888670009970); Organic By Nature – Canada Organic Green Peas (846358000619); Organic By Nature Organic Vegetable Medley with Shelled Edamame (846358000657), Organic White Supersweet Corn (846358000701, 846358000640), and Schwan's Organic Supersweet Yellow & White Cut Corn (007218060433), according to the FDA statement.
CRF stated that the recalled frozen vegetables were distributed to retailers and distribution centers from Sept. 13, 2015 and March 16 in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, as well as British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan in Canada.
