Garth Brooks Nixes Five Ireland Concerts After Scuffle With City Council

Garth Brooks has canceled his comeback tour in Ireland after the city council in Dublin refused to approve the five shows he requested.

"It is with great regret that Aiken Promotions announce that the five-concert Garth Brooks Comeback Special Event at Croke Park has been canceled. No concerts will take place," said a statement from the event's organizer released Tuesday. "We are very disappointed for the 400,000 fans who purchased tickets."

Brooks was originally scheduled to play two shows starting July 25, but three more were scheduled after event organizers experienced an overwhelming demand for tickets.

Trouble began, however, after some local residents protested the five shows, citing an ordinance that says the venue is only permitted to host three shows a year.

According to Fox News, Croke Park director Peter McKenna said that he didn't expect the five shows to cause such a stir, as exceptions to the ordinance had been made in the past.

"We had permission for the three One Direction concerts, but you are allowed to apply for a license to run other events," he said. "That’s what we’ve done for Garth Brooks. It’s not the first time, we’ve applied for various different events in the past."

As the protestors petitioned the city government last week, Brooks said he would play all "five shows or none at all" in response to the council's threat to cancel two of the shows. With Tuesday's cancellation announcement, he followed through on that threat.

CNN reported that "Brooks was the biggest selling solo recording act ever when he left the road and studio behind to concentrate on raising his three daughters 13 years ago."

After his daughter Allie graduated from high school this year, Brooks and wife Trisha Yearwood announced that he would begin touring again.
