"Get Out," Jordan Peele's critically acclaimed horror film, was listed as a comedy/musical category for the Golden Globes Awards by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes on the movies, Entertainment Weekly wrote.
The puzzling designation left Peele, part of the comedy duo Key and Peele, to declare that "Get Out" was a documentary on Twitter.
Peele's movie, hailed for using social commentary on race relations and the plot line for his satire on horror-thrillers, could be set up for success in nominations and awards with the designation, Entertainment Weekly noted.
The magazine pointed to the science fiction movie "The Martian" that was placed in the same comedy/musical category, in 2016 and won best picture, best performance by an actor (Matt Damon) and best director (Ridley Scott).
On "CBS This Morning" on Wednesday, Peele said he was trying to present race in a way that has never been portrayed on film before and felt the horror movie genre was an area that could be explored.
"Get Out" centered on a young black man (Daniel Kaluuya) who meets the family of his white girlfriend (Allison Williams) and encounters terrifying discoveries, the New York Daily News wrote.
"Get Out" raked in $253.3 million in movie theaters this year, placing it among the top 20 money-making films of 2017, according to Box Office Mojo.
Golden Globe nominations will be on Dec. 11 with the award ceremony airing on NBC Jan. 7.
