An Ohio golfer died after being attacked by a swarm of bees on Wednesday.
According to The Associated Press, Darryl Dever, 64, of Powell, was stung more than 20 times on the head, neck, and shoulders while trying to retrieve his ball from the woods at Treetops Resort in Dover Township, Michigan.
Michigan State Police Sergeant Mark Tamlyn said that Dever was having trouble breathing after being attacked. Dever's friend, a doctor who was golfing with him at the time, reported that the bees came out of the ground.
Dever did not have any known allergy to bee stings, however Tamlyn explained that a significant number of stings can be fatal even those without an allergy.
Bees and other insects can often be a hazard on golf courses around the world, and just this year pro golfer Pablo Larrazabal was stung more than a dozen times at the Malaysian Open.
"They were huge and like 30 or 40 of them started to attack me big time," he said at the time. "I didn't know what to do. My caddie told me to run, so I start running like a crazy guy, but the hornets were still there, so the other players told me to jump in the lake. I ran to the lake, threw my scorecard down, took off my shoes and jumped in the water. It was the scariest moment of my career, for sure. I've never been so scared."
Last year, a mountain lion attacked a Palm Springs golf course worker in California.
