A custodian at Disney World in Orlando found three hollowed-out grenades while emptying a trash can in the downtown area of the amusement park Wednesday night.
The harmless empty casings were likely used at some point in military training exercises, according to Jeff Williamson, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office in an interview with WOGX.
Police have yet to be able to explain how or why the grenade casings wound up in the trash can.
Downtown Disney is a 120-acre shopping, dining and entertainment district located at Walt Disney World, featuring dozens of restaurants, bars and shops. However, the receptacle in which the grenades were found was located in the parking lot of an area that is open only to staff, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
CBS affiliate WKMG said the grenades were found near the cast services building, which was evacuated as the grenades were safely removed. The close proximity to the cast services building indicate that a possible cast member or worker may have put the grenades there since guests are not allowed onto back lots, according to WKMG.
Following the removal of the grenades, shopping and entertainment resumed in the surrounding complex with Disney spokeswoman Kathleen Prihoda adding, "There was minimal disruption to guests."
Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was the most visited tourist destination in the world in 2010 with 16.97 million visits. The entire theme-park employs over 66,000 people and is the largest single-site employer in the United States
This isn't the first time unusual munitions have been found at an amusement park.
In September, a maintenance worker at an East Jakarta amusement park in Indonesia found a handgun with hundreds of bullets in a plastic bag on an artificial lake. Authorities have yet to determine who left the bag, though a local terrorist group was believed to have been responsible. The contents of the bag were apparently ruined due to water damage.
