A Walnut gun display with the back-to-school promotional sign "Own the school year like a hero" on it led to an apology from the retail giant and confusion over how the signed ended up on the display in the first place.

The photo of the back-to-school sign over the gun display went viral this week, promoting the response from Walmart.

"What's seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores," Charles Crowson, a spokesman for Walmart, told The Washington Post. "We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened."

Crowson told the Post that Walmart was trying to find what store the photo was taken at and if the sign was placed on the display by an employee or a shopper.

Leeanna May told the Post she took the photo while shopping at an Evansville, Indiana, Walmart with her husband.

"We have already lost so many innocent lives to guns," May told the Post.

Crowson told CNNMoney that the company thought it had identified the store and that the sign had been removed, but that was a mistake.

Walmart posted tweets about the sign Wednesday.
