Clinton, Sanders Agree to Four More Primary Debates

The Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders campaigns agreed on Saturday to have four more debates during the primary season.

"The people of New Hampshire wanted a debate. We said Secretary Clinton would be there," Clinton campaign chair John Podesta told BuzzFeed News.

The first of the newly-scheduled debates will take place Feb. 4 in New Hampshire, just days ahead of that state's primary on Feb. 9. The rest of the new debates will follow in the spring.

Debates in Wisconsin on Feb. 11 and Florida on March 9 were previously scheduled, and will remain so.

"Our Democratic candidates have agreed in principle to having the DNC sanction and manage additional debates in our primary schedule, inclusive of New Hampshire this week," Democratic National Comittee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Sunday.

"However, absent agreement on the details, we will give our campaigns the space to focus on the important work of engaging caucus goers in Iowa. We will reconvene negotiations and finalize the schedule with the agreement of our campaigns on Tuesday morning."

The Associated Press reported that some confusion remained about the specifics of the latter three debates.

"Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said in a statement that the Clinton campaign had not accepted debates his team proposed for March 3 in Michigan and April 14 in New York. He said they 'apparently agreed' to May 24 in California," wrote the AP.

He said they will agree to a debate in Flint, Michigan, recently rocked by water contamination, if the Clinton campaign will agree to a debate in New York City.

"Why won't they debate in Brooklyn? What's the matter with Brooklyn?" said Weaver.

The Iowa caucus, where the first votes in the nation will be cast, will take place Monday, Feb. 1.
