Iceland President: Pineapple Pizza Is Gross, But Glad I Can't Ban It

After Iceland President Guoni Th. Johannesson said last week he was "fundamentally opposed" to pineapple on pizza, he addressed the topic again Tuesday to calm the controversy that rose around his comments.

During a visit to a high school in Akureyi last week, President Guoni Th. Johannesson said he didn't agree with putting pineapple on pizza and he would ban it if he could, The Guardian reported.

The online revolt didn't take long, with pineapple pizza lovers quickly taking to Twitter to defend the topping and poke fun at the controversy.

There was such an uproar over the topic that Johannesson clarified his views on the topic Tuesday on Facebook. He posted a message in both Icelandic and English about the “pizza-controversy.”

“ I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza. I am glad that I do not hold such power. ... I would not want to hold this position if I could pass laws forbidding that which I don’t like. I would not want to live in such a country,” he wrote.
