James Spader has been cast as Ultron for Marvel’s second Avengers movie. “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” will feature Spader as the evil villain, or more accurately, as Entertainment Weekly said, “the psycho robot.”

The first "Avengers" movie, which was the third highest-grossing movie of all time, sets up high fan expectations for this sequel featuring Ultron, which Entertainment Weekly detailed as, “an artificial intelligence with a heavy-duty god-complex, overwhelmed with rage toward his creators and longing to overtake the planet with his own spawn.”

In a recent interview with EW, director Joss Whedon gave an overview of Ultron’s character, talking about how challenging it is to take the comic book version and create a character that is appealing to moviegoers. Rage, the popular director said, is of critical importance.

“As a character I love [Ultron],” Whedon told EW, “because he’s so pissed off.”

Marvel didn’t specify whether Spader will simply offer a voice to Ultron or whether the production team will use motion capture with Spader to create the machine.

Spader, an Emmy-winning actor, is already busy, including starring on a new TV show, NBC’s “The Blacklist,” and EW guessed Spader wouldn’t have time available to make a big commitment to the movie.

With the announcement that Spader will take on the bad-guy role, MTV took a shot at guessing where Whedon and his production team will take the much-anticipated movie.

Given Whedon’s EW interview where he said he’d like to “humanize” Ultron to make him more appealing, MTV speculated on whether the movie Ultron might not be an all-metal robot guy. With the “intensity” Spader has brought to other roles, that could make an interesting concept with him taking on a robot’s appearance, MTV said.

Whatever the artistic direction Whedon goes, MTV pointed out that Spader has “cornered the market on creepy.”

“That being said, one has to wonder just how much the actor’s creep-factor played a part in his casting,” MTV said.
