Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt have been getting very close again and now the world cannot help but wonder whether or not a relationship is brewing.

Countless rumors have emerged since the two reunited backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week. The public is hoping that the divorced couple will get back together, but things are not that simple for Pitt and Aniston.

The two have a long history together but not all of it was good. There were also painful moments following their divorce, many felt by Aniston, who the media portrayed as the victim following their 2005 split.

It was not long after that Pitt and Angelina Jolie were together. In a later interview with Vanity Fair, Aniston tearfully gave her side of the story.

"It cracks you open, in a way," she said. "When you try to avoid the pain, it creates greater pain. I'm a human being, having a human experience in front of the world. I wish it weren't in front of the world. I try really hard to rise above it."

Aniston admitted she felt lonely, confused, and upset. Soon after their divorce, images of Pitt and Jolie were splashed across the tabloids.

Speaking about it, Aniston said she did not "want to be a part" of the whole fiasco.

"I would much rather everyone move on. I am not defined by this relationship. I am not defined by the part they're making me play in the triangle," she said.

"It's maddening to me. But I had a mom who was very angry about her divorce, and made shots, and I don't want to play that out."

Despite her hurt, Aniston admitted that Pitt was not a "mean spirited" person. She was working through her own grief but never harbored ill feelings toward her ex.

Over the next few years, the two would gravitate toward one another. They remained in contact when Pitt split with Jolie in 2016 and have been nurturing their friendship since.

Recently, the two have been spending quite a bit of time together. According to reports, Pitt was seen attending his ex-wife's holiday party, as well as other milestone events including Aniston's 50th birthday party in February.

While they insist their relationship is strictly platonic, sources say otherwise.

One confidante told the U.K.'s Mirror that Aniston never stopped loving Pitt "even though he broke her heart when he left her for Angelina Jolie."
