Jihadi John, the ISIS killer now known to authorities as British citizen Mohammed Emwazi, has reportedly apologized to his family for the shame he has caused them, but did not express remorse for his actions.

Emwazi, 26, sent a message to his family recently through a third party, The Sunday Times reported. A computer science graduate, Emwazi apologized for the "problems and trouble the revelation of his identity has caused" his family since he was revealed as Jihadi John.

The Emwazi family was forced to flee from London to Kuwait after Mohammed Emwazi was revealed last month as the man seen beheading at least a half dozen hostages in ISIS videos, according to The Times. The family, which includes his parents and four siblings, are currently under 24-hour police protection.

Emwazi reportedly escaped the U.K. in 2013 on the back of a freight lorry on a Channel ferry and then used people-trafficking routes to slip into Syria undetected to join the Islamic State.

Mohammed Emwazi's father, 51-year-old Jassem Emwazi, has called his son a "dog, an animal, and a terrorist," according to the Daily Telegraph.

Jassem Emwazi worked as a storekeeper in Cooperative supermarket depot 12 miles from Kuwait's border with Iraq, and called recently to explain to workers why had not shown up for his job.

"He was very emotional and crying the whole time," Abu Meshaal, a coworker of Jassem Emwazi, told the Daily Telegraph. "He said, 'my son is a dog, he is an animal, a terrorist.' He said he had talked to him a lot trying to persuade him to return to his personal life but that the son didn't listen to him. He said, 'To hell with my son.'"

Jassem Emwazi told Meshaal that he was interrogated by Kuwaiti investigators Sunday and felt ashamed of his son, the newspaper noted.
