Joe Biden has been elected chair of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, where he will be tasked with considering constitutional questions separate from politics.

Biden, 74, replaces former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and follows in the footsteps of former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, Politico reported.

Biden had already been tapped to lead a new program at the University of Pennsylvania on diplomacy and security and serve as the founding chair of the Biden Institute at the University of Delaware.

The National Constitution Center is a private nonprofit museum and education center located on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. Chartered by Congress during the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, the center's mission is to bring together Americans of different perspectives for constitutional education and debate, according to its website.

"Vice President Biden's love for the Constitution, and passion for teaching all Americans about its enduring principles, have inspired people around the world," Jeffrey Rosen, president and chief executive of the center said in a statement.

"From his service in the Senate to his time in the White House, Vice President Biden has devoted himself to educating all Americans about the founding principles of the Constitution and their timeless relevance today. The National Constitution Center is America's leading convening place for nonpartisan constitutional education and debate, and all of us here are thrilled and honored that Vice President Biden will lead us as our chair."

The announcement was another feather in Biden's cap in recent months, which included President Barack Obama awarding him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with Distinction, the nation's highest civilian honor.

"I am honored to chair the National Constitution Center …," Biden said in the center's statement. "The National Constitution Center's mission to teach all Americans about the great document of human freedom that unites us has never been more timely, urgently needed, and inspiring."

A Pennsylvania native and an attorney by profession, Biden became Delaware's longest serving senator before becoming Obama's running mate in 2008, according to Biography.com.
