John Travolta Leaving Scientology? Church Panicking, Sources Say

Actress Leah Remini's dramatic departure from Scientology last month has given new life to the stale rumors that fellow Scientologist John Travolta is planning on leaving also.

Travolta, 59, converted to Scientology in 1975 and has been one of the most vocal supporters of the religion.

"I love Scientology," Travolta told The Guardian in an interview last month. "I've been involved for 38 years, and I don't think I'd be here without it because I've had a lot of losses and different negative things that have happened over the years and it really got me through brilliantly. I would walk in to a session feeling one way and walk out feeling a lot better."

But insiders say church officials are panicking after Remini walked out in early July, and want to make sure none of their other celebrity clientele thinks about doing the same.

Sources reportedly told several gossip sites that the church had a Scientology minder, or chaperone, follow Travolta and his 13-year-old daughter Ella Bleu around last week at Tony Bennett's 87th birthday party in Los Angeles.

"[The minder] spent most of the night aggressively staring at anyone Johnny talked to," a source told ShowBizSpy.com. "It was very uncomfortable, but John acted like it was normal. They badly need John to talk up Scientology to drown out the fiasco with Leah."

Scientology has long been criticized as a cult that promotes brainwashing. Critics argue the church's leaders keep control over members through character assassination, costly litigation, and/or psychological abuse.

Remini spoke out recently about her decision to leave.

"I believe that people should be able to question things," she told People magazine. "I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct. That for me, that's what I'm about. It wouldn't matter what it was, simply because no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to. I'm not about to shut up."
