Jon Stewart highlighted Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in a "Daily Show" segment on Monday, making jokes about the unusual language he employed in recent dissents, as well as the reasoning.
Stewart called specific attention to Scalia's use of the phrases "pure applesauce" and "jiggery pokery."
"Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" Stewart jibed with tongue-in-cheek. He added that Scalia must've gotten those phrases from the "Old Man Dictionary."
He then turned serious, saying, "The crankiness of Scalia's insults runs inverse to his intellectual consistency."
Stewart took issue with Scalia's reasoning in last week's gay marriage case. In that case, Scalia said that the Supreme Court should leave such decisions up to citizens, and added that those decisions should not be left up to "a select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine."
The host then pointed out a number of cases in which Scalia's decisions did not match up with the desires of the electorate, as evidenced by independent polling.
Stewart ended the monologue by playing a short cartoon parody of the children's book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" that featured Scalia as the main character.
