The domed structures on Kanye West's California property have been torn down, along with the rapper's dreams of building a utopian community.
Earlier this year construction began on the prefabricated buildings modeled on the planet Tatooine from the "Star Wars" films.
Several domes, each standing roughly 50 feet high, were being built on West's 300-acre property in Calabasas. The goal was to deploy them as low-income housing units, Elle has reported.
"It’s my first community," West said at the time. "I’m getting into development."
There was just one issue: He had not obtained the necessary permits. So when irate neighbors complained to authorities, they swiftly shut the operation down.
The LA County Dept of Public Works contacted West, and ordered him to cease construction and provide permits or demolish the structure. He was given a Sept. 13 deadline but on Wednesday CNN reported that the domes had been torn down.
"It's the objective of our building officials to help property owners build in a way that protects public safety and is in compliance with state and county codes," the department said in a statement to CNN.
Residents in the area can now breathe a collective sigh of relief.
There have been various complaints about the noise and constant flow of activity at the construction site. Before the demolishment, one unnamed neighbor described the construction scene as chaos to KCAL.
"Cars everywhere, and it was obviously an imposition on everybody on the street with very little notice."
Another neighbor expressed concern about the environmental impact of the construction work.
"The big concern is preserving and protecting the wildlife, and the simplicity of all of our lives living on this road in this neighborhood," she said.
