Katie Couric Interested in Brian Williams' Job at NBC: Report

While the extent of the fallout from Brian Williams' Iraq admission is yet to be seen, one rumor says Katie Couric may be interested in taking over as host of NBC's "Nightly News" if Williams is ousted.

"Katie still has deep, deep contacts at NBC," an insider close to Couric told the New York Daily News. "She would love to return as the 'Nightly News' anchor."

Couric left NBC in 2006 before moving to CBS. Currently, she's the global anchor of Yahoo! News.

Williams has been under fire after admitting that he wasn't, in fact, under fire on a helicopter in Iraq in 2003, a story that has been repeated numerous times on NBC. Williams, who recently celebrated his 10th anniversary at "Nightly News," said this week that the helicopter in which he was riding was not hit and forced to land.

NBC is conducting an internal investigation, and many are wondering if Williams will keep his job.

“No one smells blood like Katie,” the source told the Daily News. “She is like a shark. Brian is in deep trouble and this could be her chance. You don’t get to be as successful as Katie without being ruthless.”

However, another source close to Couric told the Daily News the claim that she wanted Williams' job was a "complete fabrication."

If Williams is ousted, Variety suggests other candidates to host NBC's "Nightly News" could include Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, and Matt Lauer.
