Katie Couric: 'Today' Fill-In for a Pregnant Savannah Guthrie?

Katie Couric left NBC's "Today" show in 2006 to host the "CBS Evening News," and network sources report the she may soon be back to fill in for current host Savannah Guthrie when she goes on maternity leave in late summer.

According to The New York Post, Couric and NBC are currently in talks that describe a temporary position for her, but might also lead to a more long-term position if her presence garners a ratings bump.

It wouldn't be the first time Couric, 57, filled in for a "Today" show host who was on maternity leave. In fact, Couric first appeared as a co-anchor of the morning show in 1991, where she filled in for Deborah Norville. Norville never returned to the show, and Couric kept the slot.

Couric and Guthrie, 42, are apparently close, having been spotted having lunch together, and were recently observed at the White House Correspondents Dinner chatting the night away.

Sources also confirmed the consideration of Meredith Vieira, who followed Couric's many years as co-chair, and was in turn replaced by Ann Curry in 2011.

Both Vieira and Couric now have daytime talk shows, but Couric's is set to end in June.

An NBC News spokeswoman responded to the rumors, telling the New York Daily News, "With the 'Today' show in a good place, we are blessed with great talent and many options to temporarily fill Savannah’s chair while she’s on leave, but there’s no plan yet. Stay tuned."

NBC trails "Good Morning America," the number one-rated morning show, and any temporary replacements will seek to maximize viewership and regain the crown they once had.
