Kid Rock is being trumpeted for the U.S. Senate in Michigan against longtime Democrat Debbie Stabenow, according to several media sites.
The musician, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, drew the interest of some at the Michigan Republican Party convention last weekend, reported RollCall.com.
Some Republicans feel that Ritchie could catch a GOP wave in the state, which sided with Trump in the 2016 election – the first time the state voted Republican in a presidential election since 1988, recording to RollCall.com.
Ritchie would appear to have an uphill battle against Stabenow, who won her third term in the Senate in 2012, easily beating former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra with 58 percent of the vote, reported MLive.com.
The Michigan native supported Ben Carson and then President Donald Trump in the last presidential election. He supported Mitt Romney in 2012.
Ritchie told Rolling Stone magazine in 2013 that he was "more libertarian" in his political beliefs.
"Look, I tend to vote Republican, but I don't like the hardcore views on either side and I'm not in bed with anybody," Ritchie said in 2013. "I'd probably be more Libertarian, but I'm a firm believer you have to pick a side. I can't be playing the middle. If you think differently, that's fine. I'd love to grab a beer and hear why you think that way."
Even though there has been no official statement from the musician about running for office, some in Michigan Republican Party sounded excited about the thought, noted Fox News.
"I have not talked to Kid Rock about that," said Michigan GOP press officer Sarah Anderson. "I think he would be awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a movement for him to run, but to my knowledge he has not been asked."
Opinions varied on social media.
