The ad had sparked outrage online, but responses on
Kmart's Facebook page are mixed.
Kmart responded to the negative comments on Facebook, saying, "Thanks for your comment. This commercial is a playful take on spreading holiday cheer. We regret if you found it objectionable."
"I think this is the tackiest commercial Kmart has ever had and very distasteful," posted Tammy Hedgecock on Facebook Monday.
Robin Hoosier added on Facebook "Playful take? What is your target audience here Kmart? Be smart and get this off the air."
Hap Phillips added on the website: "Swinging testicles in front of impressionable kids is not my idea of a family store. Goodbye Kmart and Sears."
Many Facebook responders, though, said they enjoyed the ad and did not understand the controversy.
"I love the Joe Boxer Jingle Bells ad — very, very funny," said Suzanne Koski on the Facebook post, pointing out a double standard with some ads featuring scantily clad women. "I wonder if the people who find this ad offensive also negatively commented on Pepsi's Facebook page on the equally suggestive Beyoncé ad or Hardy's page on the woman seductively eating a hamburger? Or are suggestive ads featuring women acceptable — just not ones using men?"
Teresa Holcomb Baldwin posted on Facebook: "Go Kmart!!!! Good commercial!!!! Don't worry about what these prudes say! They probably lick the screen when they have on half naked women!!! It's really in good taste and too funny!"
Twitter followers seemed to have a stronger acceptance of the Joe Boxer ads.
