Las Vegas mass killer Stephen Paddock was planning to escape after his shooting spree, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters, citing undisclosed evidence, multiple news sites were reporting Thursday morning.
Paddock, 64, rained a hail of gunfire on 22,000 people attending an outdoor country music festival before killing himself in a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Including Paddock, who killed himself, 59 died in the carnage.
Lombardo said there is evidence indicating that Paddock had planned to escape after the rampage, but declined to provide any details on what the evidence was or why he believed that, ABC News reported.
Paddock’s reported girlfriend, Marilou Danley, 62, now back in the U.S. from the Philippines, said she had no idea the shooting was coming, CNN reported, and she issued a statement on Wednesday saying she believed Paddock had planned to break up with her when he encouraged her to visit family in the Philippines.
Authorities said Paddock was holed up in his Mandalay Bay suite for three days and he used room service at some point during his stay, per ABC News.
Lombardo also said authorities found several cans of tannerite as well as 1,600 rounds of ammunition in his car parked at the hotel.
In other new details, Lombardo said he believed Paddock was a "disturbed" and "dangerous" man who managed to live a "secret life" and he built his stash of weapons without the notice of family and friends, Fox News reported.
"What we know is Stephen Paddock is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo and living a secret life, much of which will never be fully understood," Lombardo said, per Fox News.
Maria Antoinette Mangrobang, a spokeswoman for the Philippine Bureau of Immigration, said Danley traveled on an Australian passport to the Philippines from Tokyo on Sept. 15, then left for Hong Kong on Sept. 22 and flew back to the Philippines on Sept. 25, per CNN.
"(Paddock) never said anything to me, or took any action that I was aware of, that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen," Danley said through her attorney Matt Lombard, per CNN.
"It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone," she added.
