The Lamborghini Gallardo has taken its final lap after 14,000 cars sold in a 10-year period.

The LP 570-4 Spyder Performante in Rosso Mars red, model number "14022," is the last model of the Italian carmaker's most successful and popular Lamborghini in the company's 50-year history, according to MSN.com. A private collector has purchased the vehicle. The Gallardo accounts for nearly half of Lamborghini's total sales.

The Gallardo was the first car built following Audi's takeover, but debuted in 2003 to early criticisms, according to CTV News. It was overhauled two years later, and went on to become the company's greatest success, due in part to a 520bhp V-10 engine and four-wheel drive.

The company barely stayed afloat before the Gallardo. Its previous biggest seller was the Espada, with about 1,200 units, CTV said.

Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the company that bears his name in 1963. Only 120 units were produced of the first car, the "350GTV," according to the company website.

Lamborghinis have long been sought by the famous as a symbol or their wealth and vanity. Last month, rapper Nicki Minaj arrived at the launch of her Kmart clothing line in a bright pink Aventador, one of the star's fleet of luxury cars that also includes a Bentley Continental, reported the New York Daily News.

Other celebrities that own the car include Pierce Brosnon, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.

The car has also been featured in numerous movies, including 1988's Rain Man and the Cannonball Run movies.

The company isn't above froth, either. In September, a gold-plated, custom-made Aventador LP-700 was offered at auction for a starting bid of $7.5 million.
