Laura Bush has asked to be removed from a television ad that promotes gay marriage after a clip of of the former first lady was included in the spot without her permission, and that has produced a lot of online tweeting and squawking.
Bush wasn't the only prominent face to appear in the Respect of Marriage Coalition spot — Colin Powell, Dick Cheney, and Barack Obama all show their faces. So far, however, Bush been the only one to express displeasure.
"When couples are committed, they ought to have I think the same sort of rights everyone has," Bush says in the ad that hit TV screens on Wednesday. That snippet was lifted from
a 2010 Larry King interview with Bush, who was promoting a book she had written:“
Laura Bush: Spoken From the Heart.”
Some on Twitter were quick to remind Bush of that inconvenience.
Few supported Bush online and there was a general undercurrent of disapproval across the web.
Some wondered why Bush would backtrack on the issue.
The ad is being replaced with a version not including Bush.
