A LIRR train derailment in Brooklyn during rush hour Wednesday left 76 people injured.
The Long Island Railroad train was arriving at the Atlantic Terminal about 8:20 a.m. when it passed its platform and crashed into the bumper block, the New York Daily News reported. The crash created a hard, abrupt stop and partial derailment, sources told the Daily News.
Officials told the Daily News that passengers were evaluated at the scene and that all the injuries appeared to be minor. But Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news conference that one person may have suffered a broken leg, according to the New York Post.
"We'll have an investigation as to why the operator didn't stop the train before it hit the bumping block, but that's where we are at this time," Cuomo said about the incident. "It's not that it derailed. The train hit the bumping block… the bumping block basically knocked it off the track. It was a train that didn't stop when it was supposed to."
Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman told the Post that the train departed Far Rockaway at 7:18 a.m. and was supposed to have arrived at the Atlantic Terminal at 8:11 a.m. That means the train was nine minutes late when it overshot the platform on its arrival to the terminal.
"Everyone's on the floor, smoke everywhere," Commuter Joey Daliapes, 21, of Long Island, told the Post. "I smashed my whole face into the seat in front of me…There were a lot of people bleeding, ladies crying their eyes out on the floor. We didn't know if we were going to die."

In October, a Long Island Railroad train derailment in New Hyde Park injured 33 and limited rush-hour service for commuters, according to Newsday.
In December, a New Jersey Transit train with 60 people derailed entering the Hoboken Terminal, according to NJ Advance Media. On Sept. 29, the crash of a Pascack Valley train at the same terminal killed one woman and injured more than 100.
