Johnny Manziel cleared waivers Saturday and is now a free agent, a day after the Cleveland Browns released the troubled quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner.
The Browns offered no comment on its waiving of the former Texas A&M star it drafted in the
first round in 2014, The Associated Press reported.
Manziel released a statement, saying, "I'd like to thank the Browns for the opportunity they gave me — nearly two years ago, we all hoped that we were building what could be a championship team for Cleveland. I will always remember the support I received from the organization, my teammates and especially the fans."
The 23-year-old, who has earned reputation for partying, is currently the subject of a grand jury investigation into an alleged domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, who is accusing him of dragging her into a car and striking her so hard it ruptured her eardrum in January.
A source with the Dallas Cowboys, who previously had interest in
Manziel, told The Dallas Morning News that the team has no interest in pursuing the quarterback “until he gets his life back in order.”
Manziel has nearly $2.2 million left on his contract with the Browns.
