Marijuana Mail: Man Receives 11-Pound Pot Delivery on Accident

When a Sacramento man returned home to find a large FedEx/Kinkos box had been delivered, he was shocked to find 11 pounds of marijuana packed tightly into the container.

George Burton dug into the large box, which his dogsitter carried inside the house. He opened it to find a layer of spray-on Styrofoam, with $24,000 of marijuana nestled underneath. He promptly turned the illegal drug over to police.

The box had several addresses listed on it, and KC10 TV in Sacramento reported that when the box wasn’t picked up from a FedEx store, the company shipped it back to the return address — Burton’s home.

Burton told the TV news station that he and his fiancée left their home for the night after finding the pot, but not before sticking a note on the door informing interested parties that the box was turned over to the Sacramento police.

“I'm really concerned someone is going to come looking for this,” Burton told the KC10 TV reporter. “People have gotten hurt for a lot less than $24,000 worth of marijuana.”

It’s not the first time FedEx delivered a box full of marijuana. In March 2013, the company was sued after another mistaken delivery.

Maryangela Tobin of Plymouth, Mass., filed a lawsuit that FedEx broke privacy laws by giving out her address to drug dealers who were trying to recover their marijuana stash that was accidentally delivered to her house. A man showed up at her home looking for the box, she told MSN Money.

Marijuana through the mail caused even more trouble for the trucking company on the Mexico border recently. Nogales International reported that a FedEx driver was arrested after border patrol found more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana on the truck.

FedEx isn’t the only pot-beleaguered mail service. The U.S. Postal Service says more people are trying to send marijuana through the mail these days. USPS seizures of marijuana have increased by 400 percent since 2007, according to ABC News.
