Clean up your tweets, Mark Cuban told his top draft pick Dennis Smith Jr. when he joined the team, the Dallas Mavericks owner told ESPN on Sunday.
The Dallas Mavericks were playing the Phoenix Suns in an NBA Summer League game televised on ESPN when the conversation turned to character and the use of social media. Cuban chimed in about the 19-year-old former North Carolina State star.
"Always (be) aware of what's going on around you," Cuban said, noted the ESPN clip. "And you know, one of the first things after we drafted Dennis, and I'm talking to him on the phone, I'm like, 'Dude, I went through your Twitter account. It's time to get on there and 'delete.'
"And so, he went through it. And to his credit, they were gone. He had a lot of stupid stuff on there," Cuban said.
Total Pro Sports.com said that shortly after the draft, Smith, who was drafted ninth overall, was the target of "Twitter detectives" who found some of his questionable tweets, including one where he was bragging about his sexual prowess.
"At this point, it's almost surprising that NBA prospects don't preemptively delete their old tweets," said USA Today's Andrew Joseph. "After all, if there's anything regrettable on the account, NBA Twitter will find it."
Cuban must have been pleased with what he saw out of Smith during the game: 25 points in 27 minutes on 8-of-14 shooting, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, according to NBA.com.
Cuban found support on social media.
