Actor and devout Catholic Mark Wahlberg has prayed for God’s forgiveness for his role as a porn star in the movie “Boogie Nights.”

“I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past,” Wahlberg said in a speech for Chicago Inc. on Friday night, Entertainment Weekly reported.

In response to a question about which movies in particular Wahlberg may have prayed for forgiveness, he named “Boogie Nights,” in which he played porn star Dirk Diggler. The 1997 film was director Paul Thomas Anderson’s breakout movie and was nominated for several Academy Awards.

“I feel remorse when I’ve made mistakes,” Wahlberg continued, according to HuffPost. “If I could go back and change a lot of things that I did, I would. I look for ways to give back.”

Wahlberg also talked about his adolescence, including his gang affiliation and time he spent in jail.

“It was a big wake-up call for me,” he said of the jail time.

He appeared with Cardinal Blase Cupich at the event in an attempt to draw more young people into the Catholic Church, Entertainment Weekly noted.

Wahlberg hosted an event to honor Pope Francis in 2015 when the pope visited the U.S. and has spoken openly about his Catholic faith.

Not everyone on Twitter agreed that Wahlberg should ask forgiveness for his role in “Boogie Nights.”
