Airbag defects have led to a recall of nearly 3.4 million cars announced by several Japanese automakers last month including Honda, Toyota, and Nissan.
Worldwide, Toyota will be recalling 1.7 million cars that include its popular Corolla, Matrix and Tundra models.
Nissan will be recalling approximately 480,000 cars, while Mazda says it will be recalling around 45,000 vehicles due to air bag defects.

After announcing that it will be recalling more than 1.1 million automobiles, Honda specifically cited passenger front airbag inflators as the reason for its recall.
The defect reportedly caused the airbags to deploy with too much pressure.
"It is possible that the passenger front airbag inflators in affected vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which may cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury," the company said in a statement, CNN reported.
Honda said it was unaware of any injuries or deaths resulting from the defective airbags.
In 2008, Honda offered similar recalls for the same problem in driver's side airbags, CNN noted.
Toyota also reported five instances of airbag malfunctions, and similarly claimed that no injuries occurred as a result of the defective device.
The airbags in question were manufactured by Japan-based supplier Takata Corp. according to Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada.
For U.S. consumers, the recall includes:
• Honda: 2001 to 2003 Civics and 2002 Odyssey minivans
• Nissan: 2001 to 2003 Maximas, Pathfinders, Sentras, Infiniti I35s and Infiniti QX4s
• Mazda: 147 - 2003 and 2004 Mazda6 sedans and two 2004 Mazda RX-8s
• Toyota: Some but not all 2001 to 2003 Corollas, Matrixes, Tundra pickups and Lexus CS430s
Owners will be notified by the manufacturers directly, CNN reported.
Japanese automakers aren't the only car manufacturers who have been affected by the defective airbags at the center of the massive recall.

General Motors plans to recall approximately 48,000 Pontiac Vibes that were manufactured in the same factory as the Toyota Matrix.
Additionally, Germany's BMW reportedly used the same airbag inflators in some of its cars as stated in a Takata document sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The German automaker says it is in the process of determining which models might have featured the faulty part.
