Matthew McConaughey raised more than $7 million through his virtual concert that was held to assist those who have been impacted by the storms that hammered Texas in recent weeks, Entertainment Tonight has reported.
The livestreamed event, "We're Texas," took place on Sunday and featured a sterling lineup of musicians and celebrities with roots in Texas all coming together to support the cause. Among them were musical acts including Kirk Franklin, Los Lonely Boys, Willie Nelson and Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson and Randy Rogers, who all performed during the concert, while actors like Jamie Foxx, Renée Zellweger, and Jennifer Garner spoke about their home state, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
Commenting on "We're Texas," McConaughey said the benefit was held in an effort to "restore Texas" following the storms.
"One of my favorite things about Texans is that we like to help ourselves, and while that spirit is still alive and well, a lot of Texans can't help themselves right now unless we help them," he said in a release, CNN reports.
Viewers alone pledged $132,000 on the night and more was raised from sponsors and special guests. The money will go to several organizations including Austin Disaster Relief Network, Meals on Wheels Central Texas, The Salvation Army, Save the Children, St. Bernard Project, and Team Rubicon disaster relief.
"Tonight is about helping people get back on their feet after they've gotten knocked down," McConaughey said on Sunday. "It is about lending a helping hand to people who aren't just looking for a handout. It's about serving people who want to serve themselves but are having a hard time doing it right now. It is about reviving our spirit, not only in Texas, but in all of us."
