The Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor fight is scheduled for Aug. 26, which comes after months of back-and-forth banter about a potential boxing match between the retired boxing phenom and UFC's current superstar.
This Las Vegas fight has been speculated about among fans, media and others for the past several months, according to USA Today.
Stephen Espinoza, the executive vice president for Showtime Sports, which will be showing the pay-per-view fight, looks at this upcoming bout as a "high-profile" fight.
"Without a doubt boxing is surging," Espinoza said, according to USA Today. "We see that in our ratings and in our digital traffic. What has become clear to those in the boxing industry is that in order to attract attention you've got to have signature, high-profile events."
"This is really an unprecedented event," he said, according to The Associated Press. "Really we haven't seen anything in modern history that resembles it, it's impossible to predict how many sales this will do."
Both Mayweather and McGregor took to social media to officially announce the fight.
Mayweather has been unblemished in his boxing career, recording a 49-0 record thus far. However, he hasn't been in the ring since what was supposed to be his last fight in September 2015.
McGregor, the two-division UFC champ, on the other hand, looks nowhere near retirement.
He recently applied for a boxing license in Nevada to do his part to make sure this fight became a reality, considering that was one of the requirements on his end.
Former prize fighter Oscar De La Hoya is not a fan of this event, which will put a boxer in the ring with a UFC fighter for perhaps the first time -- at least in an event of this magnitude with so much hoopla surrounding it.
"Floyd's and Conor's motivation is clear. It's money," De La Hoya wrote in a Facebook post. "But it's also a lack of consequences for when the fight ends up being the disaster that is predicted. After this fight, neither of them will need us anymore. Floyd will go back to retirement -- presumably for good this time with another nine-figure paycheck -- and Conor will go back to the UFC."
"It's a win-win for them. It's a lose-lose for us...We will have squandered another opportunity to bring boxing back to its rightful place as the sport of kings," he added.
This comes after McGregor spoke boldly about the fight in March, saying: "No one in this boxing game knows what's coming. Trust me on that!" Fox Sports reported.
"When I step in there, I'll shock the whole [expletive] world," he added, at the time. "Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes. 28 years of age. Confident as a mother [expletive]. Long, rangy, dangerous with every hand."
"Trust me, I'm going to stop Floyd," McGregor said. "You're all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words."
