Meg Ryan, who found box office gold with "Sleepless in Seattle," prefers New York City these days, where she has been living quietly with her adopted daughter and rocker boyfriend John Mellencamp.
In this week's
cover story of People, friends told the magazine that Ryan, 51, has left behind Hollywood and the West Coast for downtown Manhattan and Martha's Vineyard as she raises her daughter, Daisy, 8, who she adopted from China in 2006.
Delia Ephron, a friend of Ryan's, told People that living in New York "makes you different. Los Angeles is just about movies. New York is about so much more than that, and so is Meg."

The Daily Mail reported that Ryan and Mellencamp, 61, had been together since early 2011. The Mail said the two were friends before the coupling up.
Ryan divorced actor husband Dennis Quaid in 2001 after 10 years of marriage, and they had one son, Jack, who is now 20, according to the Daily Mail. Mellencamp divorced third wife, model Elaine Irwin, in 2011, after 18 years of marriage.
Ryan began acting while working on a journalism degree at New York University and that eventually led her to being cast in the 1986 blockbuster "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise,
according to IMDb.com. She lived briefly with her "Top Gun" co-star Anthony Edwards before meeting Quaid during the making of the Steven Spielberg movie "Innerspace" in 1987.
Ryan starred opposite of Billy Crystal in 1989's "When Harry Met Sally," for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. Before she starred with Tom Hanks in "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993, she appeared with him in "Joe Versus the Volcano" in 1990, according to the website. Ryan teamed with Hanks again in the 1998 romantic comedy "You've Got Mail,"
"Sleepless in Seattle" went on to earn $126.6 million at the box office, Ryan's highest grossing film as the lead actress,
according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Ryan was named one of People's 50 most beautiful people in the world in 1994.
