Actor Mel Gibson said he was "surprised" that President-elect Donald Trump named him a "special ambassador" to Hollywood, but is ready to embrace the title.

The "Braveheart" star spoke with Variety about the role shortly after Trump made the announcement last week.

"I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can," Gibson told the outlet.

"Any chance the position comes with an ambassador's residence?" he joked.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump on Thursday named Gibson a "special ambassador" to Hollywood alongside actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone.

"It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California," Trump wrote. "They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!"

He continued: "These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!"

Voight spoke about the role, telling USA Today he felt it was possible to restore Hollywood to its heyday.

"I'm old enough to have touched some years of the golden age of Hollywood, and I've seen its slow deterioration since. Today, we are in pretty bad shape," he actor said. "Very few films are made here now, but we are fortunate to have an incoming president who wants to restore Hollywood to its former glory, and with his help, I feel we can get done."

Resilience, Voight said, is crucial, especially after the Los Angeles wildfires.

"Now we have been through these horrible fires and our spirits are down, but we are resilient. We will help each other and we will rebuild. Love to everyone across the nation who has come to our aid," he said.
