Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are spending time apart, a representative confirmed, another possible step toward what could be the end of their 13-year marriage.

"Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage," a spokeswoman for Zeta-Jones told Reuters. "There will be no further comment."

Neither star has filed for divorce or taken a step toward a legal separation.

Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, haven't been photographed together since April 22, when they attended a Barbra Streisand tribute, according to People magazine. The two Oscar winners have been seen individually on red carpets, and have taken separate vacations with their two children, Dylan, 13, and 10-year-old Cary.

Douglas' New York office had no comment on the People report, according to Reuters.

The pair married in 2000 and have both struggled with health issues. Douglas battled throat cancer in 2010, while Zeta-Jones announced in April that she was again receiving treatment for bipolar disorder, after initially getting help in 2011.

Also, in April 2010 Douglas' eldest son, Cameron, was sentenced to five years in prison on drug charges.

"Our sources tell us there were several factors," Peter Castro, deputy editor for People, told ABC News. "It's undeniable that his throat cancer and her bi-polar disorder created a perfect storm of tension and issues that were really hard to overcome."

The couple reportedly decided on the break after Douglas returned from Cannes in May.

The couple met in 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival in France and got engaged on New Year's Eve of 1999.

Both are Tinsel Town A-listers. Douglas, the son of legendary actor Kirk Douglas, won an Oscar for his portrayal of stockbroker Gordon Gekko in the iconic 1987 film "Wall Street." He also starred in "Fatal Attraction," "Falling Down" and the recent "Behind the Candelabra" with Matt Damon.

Zeta-Jones starred in the films "Traffic," "Entrapment" and "The Mask of Zorro," and won her best supporting actress Academy Award for the 2002 musical "Chicago."
