Michelle Williams' pay gap controversy with Mark Wahlberg, her "All the Money in the World" costar, has renewed after The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Wahlberg was paid nearly 10 times more than Williams for the movie.
The difference in their pay cropped up Jan. 9 when USA Today reported that Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million for reshoots of the movie when Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in one of the lead roles while Williams was paid a per diem of $80, which totaled less than $1,000.
That brought complaints throughout Hollywood, making the pay difference the object lesson of the pay gap controversy between male and female actors. Many took to social media to argue the point.
The Hollywood Reporter relit the fuse Thursday when it reported that Wahlberg, a two-time Oscar nominee, made $5 million for the movie and Williams – a four-time Academy Award nominee – was paid $625,000 for her performance, despite the two having roughly the same screen time.
The celebrity publication added that Williams is being considered for a fifth Oscar nomination for the performance.
Melissa Silverstein, founder of Women and Hollywood and director of the Athena Film Festival, told The Hollywood Reporter that such discrepancies have women doing what was once taboo in the industry – sharing their salary amounts with one another.
"For women in Hollywood, the system was created to isolate them from each other and to pit them against one another," Silverstein told the publication. "Women are taking back the power by sharing the information in a way that has never been done before."
The controversy over the reshoots led to Wahlberg donating $1.5 million he made to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in costar Michelle Williams' name, wrote CNN.
"Over the last few days my reshoot fee for 'All the Money in the World' has become an important topic of conversation," Wahlberg said in a statement, per CNN. "I 100 percent support the fight for fair pay and I'm donating the $1.5M to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams' name."
