Michigan Beer Bill Would Ensure All Pints Are Really 16 Ounces

A beer bill introduced to the Michigan legislature aims to make sure that drinkers get what they pay for – a full 16 ounces of beer in a pint.

If bars or restaurants advertise a pint of beer, the glass should hold at least 16 ounces, and a proposed bill would amend the Liquor Control Act to make sure that’s the case, the Detroit Free Press said. Apparently, some glasses with thicker bottoms, while advertised as pints, only hold 12 to 14 ounces.

Although it may not be the most important bill on the legislature’s agenda, it’s important to more than a few bar owners, who might get aggravated if they have to replace their glassware, the Free Press said.

Mark Sellers of Barfly Ventures in Grand Rapids told the newspaper that saying “pint” was more a designation of a style of glass than an actual measurement. While he said his bar uses 16-ounce glasses for pints, some don’t and it could cost the owners.

Rep. Brandon Dills, who co-sponsored the bill, told NBC News the issue was more about being truthful in advertising than anything else.

“It’s a pretty simple equation,” he said. “If you offer a pint of beer, you should be selling 16 ounces.”

John Holl of All About Beer magazine told the Free Press the glasses that don’t hold as much beer are called “cheater pints.” If the business doesn’t want to buy new glasses, then they shouldn’t describe the beer as a pint, he said.

A few beer drinkers tweeted about the proposed regulation change, though at least one thought there might be an underlying agenda.
