A Mike Pence town hall meeting in Nevada tensed up when some in the crowd jeered a "military mom" who challenged the Republican vice presidential candidate on Donald Trump's feud with a Muslim military family, reported Politico from Carson City on Monday.
Pence asked the crowd to let her have her say.
The woman, identified as Carson City native Catherine Byrne, whose son serves in the U.S. Air Force, was booed when she questioned Pence about Trump's response to the parents of fallen Capt. Humayun Khan, said Politico.
"Time and time again, (Donald) Trump has disrespected our nation's armed forces and veterans. And his disrespect for Mr. Khan …," Byrne said addressing Pence, in reference to Capt. Khan's father, Khizr Khan, as the boos intensified.
"Will there ever be a point in time when you're able to look Trump in the eye and tell him enough is enough?" Byrne asked Pence, according to NBC News. "You have a son in the military. How do you tolerate his disrespect?"
Pence attempted to quiet the crowd, saying, "Folks that's what freedom looks like and what freedom sounds like." The Indiana governor went on to praise both Capt. Khan and his running mate, noted NBC News.
"(Khan is an) American hero and we honor him and honor his family," Pence said. "The only other thing I would say to you is having spent time with our nominee, I have never been around someone more devoted to the armed forces of this country, more devoted to the families of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marine and coast guard and no one more devoted to the veterans in this country. Donald Trump supports our soldiers and supporters our veterans like no other leader in my lifetime."
Denise Martinez, who told Politico she booed Byrne during her question, praised Pence for how he handled the incident.
"I thought he handled it really, really well," Martinez told Politico. "Looking back, I think I would've taken the high road. He handled it the right way, the way I wish Trump would have."
