Mirai Nagasu's triple axel just made history as the first landed by an American woman at the Olympics and the third by any woman throughout the history of the games, according to Sports Illustrated.

The 24-year-old from Arcadia, California, nailed the technical move during a figure skating team event which, upon conclusion on Monday, saw the U.S. team bag bronze at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, The Guardian noted.

The triple axel is regarded as such a tough move because the skater has to launch into the air while facing forward and then complete three-and-a-half rotations before landing again.

Japan's Midori Ito and Mao Asada are the only other women to have landed it at the Olympics and, while Nagasu successfully completed the triple axel during a competition in September, according to CNN, so much more is at stake at the Olympics and skaters tend to stay away from risky moves.

"Going into it, I was like a train and I was like, 'Get on the tracks and get some speed,'" she said of the moment leading up to her jump, according to The Guardian.

"And, I tripped a couple times. I don't know if you could tell. It was more something I could feel, but to nail it the way I did, even out of the corner of my eye, I could see my teammates standing out of excitement."

Nagasu's coach, Tom Zakrajsek, said she was relentless about practicing the triple axel, performing it up to 30 times a day, 10 each at her three daily training sessions.

"Mirai craves repetition," he said, according to Time. "She lands them anywhere between 85 percent to 95 percent of the time on a daily basis."
